Big 12 admits refs erred in Kansas' win at Iowa State
The Big 12 Conference acknowledged that the referees make mistakes near the end of regulation in Kansas' overtime win at Iowa State on Monday night.
The sequence in question came with five seconds to go when Kansas guard Elijah Johnson ran into Iowa State's Georges Niang, who appeared to have his feet seet, in the lane. No whistle was blown.
Johnson missed the driving shot but then Niang was called for holding in the scramble for the loose ball. Johnson made two free throws that sent the game to overtime. Kansas ended up winning 108-96 to snap Iowa State's 22-game home-court winning streak.
"The Big 12 Conference acknowledges that officiating errors were made at the end of regulation during (Monday) night's Kansas at Iowa State men's basketball game," the conference said in a statement. "The plays have been reviewed and appropriate measures will be taken by the coordinator of men's basketball officials to adjust the number of future assignments for the two officials involved in conjunction with Conference policies."
Curtis Shaw, the Big 12's coordinator of officials, said disciplinary action is limited to future assignments because referees are independent contractors.
