Betancourt to disabled list again

The Colorado Rockies placed closer Rafael Betancourt on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season, MLB.com reported Friday.

Betancourt's latest ailment is a sprained right elbow, but there is some concern that he tore an elbow ligament. The team will send him for an MRI on Monday.

The Rockies made several other corresponding moves, calling up right-hander Rob Scahill, activating right-hander Jhoulys Chacin from bereavement leave and designating right-hander Edgmer Escalona for assignment.

Betancourt spent from June 1 to June 28 on the DL with a strained right groin and again from July 15 through Aug. 16 after an appendicitis.

After picking up a save on Tuesday night against Philadelphia, Betancourt struggled in his next two outings. On Wednesday, he gave up two doubles, an intentional walk and a walk-off single in a blown save against the Phillies. The next day, Betancourt entered the game with a one-run lead and suffered the loss after the Phillies rallied for a 5-4 victory.

As a result of the last two games, the 38-year-old's ERA rose from 2.93 to 4.08. He is 2-5 with 16 saves in 32 appearances this season.
