BC hires Addazio as head coach

After just two seasons as the head football coach at Temple, Steve Addazio took on a more prominent job Tuesday, when he was hired as Boston College's head coach.

Addazio replaced Frank Spaziani, who was fired after the Eagles went 2-10 this season, 1-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

BC announced Addazio's hiring Tuesday, and the new coach will meet the Boston media Wednesday.

"Steve Addazio brings three critical traits to Boston College football," BC athletic director Brad Bates said in a statement. "First, he genuinely cares about his students and will facilitate their formation and development in meaningful ways that creates a family culture extending into the entire BC community. Second, he has a passion that is contagious and an energy that will motivate those fortunate to meet him. Finally, he is a proven winner with an extensive history of success as an assistant and head coach that includes two national championships."

The national titles came in 2006 and 2008, when Addazio was part of Urban Meyer's coaching staff at the University of Florida. Addazio was the Gators' offensive line coach from 2005-07, offensive assistant head coach in 2008 and offensive coordinator in 2009-10. Tim Tebow won the 2007 Heisman Trophy behind an Addazio-constructed offensive line.

In Addazio's first season as Temple's head coach, the Owls went 9-4 in 2011, beating Wyoming in the New Mexico Bowl. Temple finished 4-7 this year.

"Steve Addazio has done a tremendous job with Temple football in his two years at the university, and we wish him nothing but the best," Temple athletic director Bill Bradshaw said. "Temple football has never been stronger, and I am confident we will be able to attract a high-level pool of candidates for the position and the program will continue its upward momentum."

According to CBSsports.com, Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco and New Orleans Saints offensive line coach Aaron Kromer were both candidates for the BC job.
