Basketball-Fenerbahce get Euroleague revenge on champions Real

By Zoran Milosavljevic BELGRADE, Oct 30 (Reuters) - An expensively-assembled Fenerbahce Istanbul lived up to their price tag with a 77-66 home win over Euroleague holders Real Madrid on Friday for a measure of revenge after last season's semi-final loss to the Spaniards. Russians Khimki were the day's other big winners as they thrashed Red Star Belgrade 91-53, while Olympiakos Piraeus edged Emporio Armani Milan 71-66 in a battle of former champions. Smarting from last week's 91-70 mauling by unfancied Strasbourg, Fenerbahce delighted the fans with a steely defence that confined Real to six three-pointers from 28 attempts. Centre Ekpe Udoh and forward Luigi Datome, who left the NBA during the summer break to join Fenerbahce, led the Turkish side with 15 points each. "What a game, and I can see why Real were the champions last year," former Los Angeles Clippers campaigner Udoh told Euroleague television. "We came out, had a great crowd and played tough." Real's second Euroleague defeat in their opening three games is likely to ring the alarm bells for coach Pablo Laso after they also slipped up at home to Valencia in the Spanish league. "I said from the beginning it would be a tough group but we still have seven games," said Laso. "We played the way they wanted us to for long spells and, although we improved in the second half, we were undone by poor long-range shooting." Red Star missed injured captain Luka Mitrovic, who will be sidelined until March with a knee injury, and were no match for rampant Khimki on Moscow's outskirts. The Russian side's entire 12-man roster scored and conjured 18 steals, while the Serbian champions committed a staggering 26 turnovers while hitting only three of 19 three-pointers. "I am happy for the way we played today with good energy, activity and effort," Khimki's Lithuanian coach Rimas Kurtinaitis told a news conference. "Everyone played about 20 minutes and I want to thank all my players for a job well done tonight." Olympiakos's Patric Young scored 18 points and Vassilis Spanoulis added 14 to propel their side at Milan, whose guard Alessandro Gentile stood out with a game-high 24 but lacked support. Bayern Munich eased to a 76-61 home win against Strasbourg, Unicaja Malaga beat Darussafaka Istanbul 81-69 and Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar enjoyed an 83-75 win at Stelmet Zielona Gora.
