Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

June 4 (The Sports Xchange) - The New York Yankees placed first baseman Mark Teixeira on the disabled list Saturday with a right knee articular cartilage tear. Teixeira left Friday night's 6-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in the third inning with discomfort in his right knee. He was later sent to a hospital for an MRI. Teixeira, 36, also has battled neck spasms and missed four games May 25-28 as a result. A broken leg in 2015 cost him 51 games and he missed all but 15 games in 2013 after undergoing surgery on the tendon sheath in his right wrist. - - - The Yankees called up infielder Chris Parmelee from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Teixeira's place on the roster. The team also transferred infielder/outfielder Dustin Ackley, who is out for the season with a dislocated right shoulder, to the 60-day disabled list. - - - The Chicago White Sox acquired right-hander James Shields from the San Diego Padres for two players. Shields, 34, is in the second year of a four-year deal that has $65 million remaining on it. However, he can opt out after this season. He is 2-7 with a 4.28 ERA. The White Sox also received cash. The Padres received starting pitcher Erik Johnson and minor league shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. - - - The Pittsburgh Pirates made a series of pitching moves, recalling left-hander Cory Luebke and selecting right-hander Curtis Partch from Triple-A Indianapolis. Pittsburgh also optioned right-handers Wilfredo Boscan and Rob Scahill to Indianapolis. To make room for Partch on the 40-man roster, the Pirates transferred right-hander Ryan Vogelsong from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list. Vogelsong was placed on the disabled list on May 24, a day after he was hit in the face on a pitch thrown by the Colorado Rockies' Jordan Lyles and sustained facial fractures. He had surgery on Thursday. - - - The Seattle Mariners selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Edwin Diaz from Double-A Jackson and optioned right-handed pitcher Cody Martin to Triple-A Tacoma. - - - New York Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler (elbow surgery) was originally set to return July 1 but his timetable has been pushed back to shortly after the July 11-14 All-Star break.
