Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

May 23 (The Sports Xchange) - Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong was hit on the left side of his face by a pitch from Colorado Rockies right-hander Jordan Lyles in the second inning Monday and left the game. Vogelsong was struck near his left eye - the ball might have glanced off his batter's helmet - by a 92-mph fastball. He immediately dropped to the ground while home plate umpire Jeff Nelson quickly waved to the Pirates' bench for assistance. A trainer applied a towel on the left side of Vogelsong's face, which appeared to be bloody. The right-hander remained in the batters' box for several minutes, and he was slightly off balance as he clutched the towel to his face while getting into a cart to be taken off the field. The team said after the game that Vogelsong was being examined for a left eye injury. He will stay overnight at Pittsburgh hospital. No update is expected until Tuesday. -- Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Ross Ohlendorf appealed his suspension stemming from a May 11 incident against the Minnesota Twins, and that suspension was rescinded. In the ninth inning at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohlendorf hit Pittsburgh's David Freese and was immediately ejected. Both teams had been warned by the umpires after earlier batters were hit. Ohlendorf, who is 3-4 with a 4.79 ERA, said he didn't hit Freese on purpose and was surprised by the suspension. Four Pittsburgh batters were hit in that game; two Reds were hit. The Pirates won, 5-4. -- Mets first baseman Lucas Duda was put on the 15-day disabled list with a stress fracture in his lower back. "He will be out for a while," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "He's a huge piece of our team." Utility man Ty Kelly, who began his career in the Baltimore system, was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas, and the Mets designated LHP Dario Alvarez for assignment. Duda is hitting .231 with seven homers and 19 RBIs. -- The Cleveland Indians placed relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain (chest muscle) on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 22. Left-hander Ryan Merritt was recalled from Triple-A Columbus to take Chamberlain's spot on the roster. Also, pitcher Carlos Carrasco (left hamstring strain) threw a three-inning simulated game Monday and followed it with 10 pitches in the bullpen. Carrasco's next step will be a three-inning rehab outing Saturday with Low-A Lake County of the Midwest League. -- Two Tigers shared the American League's Player of the Week award, first baseman Miguel Cabrera and center fielder Cameron Maybin. Cabrera hit .500 with three home runs and six RBIs while Maybin batted .600 with five RBIs and six stolen bases. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
