Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

March 20 (The Sports Xchange) - Chicago White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said Sunday he met with players and staff over Adam LaRoche's sudden retirement and that the organization will no longer discuss the situation publicly. LaRoche retired last week when executive vice president Kenny Williams sought to limit the amount of time LaRoche's 14-year-old son, Drake, was spending around the team. The way Williams handled the decision ruffled feathers among the White Sox players and ace left-hander Chris Sale referred to Williams as a liar on Friday. Reinsdorf backed Williams in a statement Sunday and is now calling on the organization to move forward. "I have taken the past few days to personally meet with everyone involved, including Adam LaRoche, members of our front office, uniformed staff and some of our active players," Reinsdorf said. "I continue to have nothing but the greatest regard for Adam -- in fact, my respect for him has grown during this process -- and I applaud his desire to spend more time with his family." - - - Chicago Cubs left-hander Jon Lester has been pitching with a floating bone chip in his throwing elbow for years, according to reports. The Chicago Cubs knew about the bone chip when they signed Lester to a six-year, $155 million contract after the 2014 season, Yahoo Sports reported. The bone chip was discovered during a 2014 MRI exam before Lester signed his deal with the Cubs. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Lester calls the chip a "nonissue." Lester, 32, pitched 205 innings in the regular season last year, plus another 14 innings in the postseason. He posted an 11-12 regular-season record with a 3.34 ERA in 32 starts in 2015. He made two starts in the postseason, losing both games. - - - The Miami Marlins named left-hander Wei-Yin Chen as their Opening Day starter over right-hander Jose Fernandez. Manager Don Mattingly announced Sunday that Chen will get the start against the Detroit Tigers at Marlins Park on April 5. Chen, 30, was signed to a five-year, $80 million contract this offseason. It will mark Chen's first start in an opener. He went 11-8 with a 3.34 ERA last season for the Baltimore Orioles. In four major league seasons, Chen is 46-32 with a 3.72 ERA. Fernandez, 23, will start the second game on April 6 in Miami. He returned to the mound last July after undergoing Tommy John ligament replacement surgery in May 2014 and made 11 starts, going 6-1 with a 2.92 ERA. - - - Relief pitcher Rafael Soriano has announced his retirement after 14 big-league seasons. Soriano, 36, was an All-Star for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010 and topped 40 saves three times. Soriano signed a minor-league deal with the Toronto Blue Jays last month. He was unable to report to spring training due to visa issues in the Dominican Republic. The right-handed Soriano recorded 207 career saves as well as a 24-28 record and 2.89 ERA in 591 career appearances. Soriano led the American League with 45 saves in 2010. He saves 42 games for the New York Yankees in 2012 and 43 for the Washington Nationals in 2013. (Editing by Andrew Both)
