May 11 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Wednesday's Major League Baseball games. Nationals 3, Tigers 2 In a pitchers duel that lived up to the hype, Max Scherzer allowed two runs and struck out 20 to tie an MLB record as the Washington Nationals beat his former team Detroit 3-2. Scherzer, who walked none, struck out the side in the eighth to give him 18 strikeouts and set a Nationals franchise record. He gave up a solo homer to J.D. Martinez to start the ninth as the Tigers cut the lead to 3-2 but then struck out Miguel Cabrera, allowed a single to Victor Martinez, fanned Justin Upton and got James McCann on a grounder to end the game. Mariners 6, Rays 5 (11 innings) Chris Iannetta completed a four-hour game, and a Mariners sweep, with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 11th inning as Seattle beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-5 Wednesday afternoon. Iannetta hit a 3-2 pitch from Steve Geltz (0-1) over the center field fence for the walk-off homer and the Mariners' third consecutive win. Astros 5, Indians 3 (16 innings) Marwin Gonzalez hit a walk-off home run in the 16th inning as Houston capped a marathon win over Cleveland. Gonzalez drilled a pitch from Cody Anderson (0-3) out to right field two batters after shortstop Carlos Correa recorded the first Astros hit since the seventh inning. Houston stranded 17 baserunners but turned a lights-out performance from right-handed reliever Michael Feliz (1-0) into a needed victory. Cubs 7, Padres 4 Brett Wallace clubbed a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning as the San Diego claimed a victory over Chicago Cubs in the opener of a split doubleheader. The result halted a three-game skid for the Padres and an eight-game winning streak for the Cubs. Rockies 8, Diamondbacks 7 Colorado blew a 7-1 lead, but Nolan Arenado homered with two outs in the eighth inning to salvage a victory over the Arizona. Arenado's 13th home run of the season helped the Rockies end their seven-game losing streak at Coors Field. The blast, which came against Tyler Clippard (2-1), also ended Arizona's five-game winning streak and kept the Diamondbacks from sweeping the three-game series. Rangers 6, White Sox 5 Adrian Beltre's go-ahead base hit in the sixth inning turned out to be the game-winner as Texas topped Chicago. Beltre's single to center scored Ian Desmond from second for Texas, which rallied from deficits three times to take two of three from the owners of the American League's best record. Orioles 9, Twins 2 Mark Trumbo hit a pair of homers, and Chris Davis and Adam Jones had four hits apiece as Baltimore beat Minnesota. Tyler Wilson (2-1) pitched seven solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits. The Orioles won the final two games of the three-game series after the opener was postponed Monday. Baltimore owns a four-game winning streak, its longest winning streak since starting the season 7-0. Braves 5, Phillies 1 Williams Perez was masterful in this return from the minors and struggling Atlanta got to celebrate an ultra-rare home victory. Perez, starting in place of the traded Jhoulys Chacin, faced just batter over the minimum in eight innings and the Braves snapped an 11-game home losing streak with a victory over Philadelphia. Giants 5, Blue Jays 4 (13 innings) San Francisco is struggling so badly for offense of late, it will take wins any way it can get them. Buster Posey, mired in a 1-for-24 slump, did not even have to swing the bat to knock in the winning run. The catcher drew a bases-loaded walk in the 13th inning, giving the Giants a win over Toronto. San Francisco avoided being swept in the three-game series. Royals 7, Yankees 3 Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run first inning and Kansas City went on to beat New York at Yankee Stadium. The Royals snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 2-4 on a road trip that ends Thursday. The Yankees fell to 4-2 on a 10-game homestand. Red Sox 13, Athletics 3 Boston finished off a dazzling three-game demolition of Oakland. Sizzling Jackie Bradley Jr. hit two more home runs, and he drove in six runs for the second time in the series, and Dustin Pedroia also homered to power Boston to its third straight blowout of the A's that ran Oakland's losing streak to five games. Pirates 5, Reds 4 Josh Harrison, Andrew McCutchen, David Freese and Kang Jung-ho homered, lifting Pittsburgh to a come-from-behind victory over Cincinnati at Great American Ball Park. Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer for Cincinnati, which earned a split in what became a two-game series when Tuesday's game was rained out. Mets 4, Dodgers 3 Noah Syndergaard became the first major league pitcher since 2007 to hit two home runs in a game in a win over Los Angeles. Syndergaard homered off of Kenta Maeda twice, including a go-ahead, three-run shot in the fifth. Micah Owens was the last major league pitcher to hit two home runs in a game, and Walt Terrell last did it for the Mets in 1983 at Wrigley Field. Syndergaard (3-2) earned his first win since April 18 at Philadelphia, giving up two runs -- on solo home runs by Corey Seager and Yasmani Grandal -- while allowing six hits over eight innings. He struck out six and walked one. Cardinals 5, Angels 2 St. Louis got seven strong innings out of Jaime Garcia and some timely hitting to beat Los Angeles. Garcia's only blemish came on a two-run homer by C.J. Cron in the fourth inning, but the runs were unearned because the homer came immediately after third baseman Matt Carpenter's two-out error.
