Ball State surprises fifth-year walk-on with scholarship (Video)

Programs often come up with special ways to reward walk-ons with scholarships. What Ball State did for Kyle Seger on Friday night is one of the best ones yet.

To wrap up a long day of camp that included workouts and positional meetings, the Cardinals lightened the mood a bit by playing a game called “The Cardinal is Right” during a full squad meeting. A bunch of players were called to the front of the room to guess a word with the assistance of their position group. But things went a little differently when Seger was called down.

Seger didn’t even have time to guess because his teammates erupted in celebration when the words “you have earned a full scholarship” flashed across the screen.

What a cool moment.

Seger, a 6-foot, 248-pound defensive end from Huntingburg, Indiana, joined the program as a walk-on in 2012. The fifth-year senior has appeared in a combined 11 games over the past two seasons on defense and special teams.

“It was a special moment because it’s been a lot of hard work and a long four-and-a-half years to get to this point,” Seger said.

The Cardinals open up at Georgia State in Atlanta on Sept. 2 to kick off the first year under Mike Neu.
