Third Basemen

Dropping off: Matt Dominguez (40th)

o Trades did little positive for the fantasy values of Ramirez, Johnson and Uribe. Ramirez is hitting cleanup for the Pirates, but his new ballpark will cost him homers. I initially assumed Uribe would be an everyday guy for the Mets, but he’s playing primarily against lefties at the moment and he won’t even do that if Wright returns in a few weeks as hoped.

o One player aided by trades was Chisenhall, who is now getting a look in right field after the Indians sent both Brandon Moss and David Murphy packing. He’s worth trying in deeper mixed leagues.

o The Rays are finally promoting Shaffer after he hit .261/.353/.592 with 16 homers in 184 at-bats for Triple-A Durham (and .262/.363/.470 in 149 at-bats in Double-A). He’ll presumably do a fair amount of DHing, with John Jaso shifting into the outfield in Steven Souza’s place, and maybe get some time at first base over James Loney. He checks in at No. 32 for now.

o It’s not every day you see a guy with an .838 OPS get designated for assignment, but that’s what the Blue Jays did to Valencia on Friday. He’ll get a job elsewhere in short order, but an expanded role against righties wouldn’t do him or his next team any good.

o Garcia, who replaced Uribe at third base in Atlanta, barely makes it on the rankings at No. 42, partly because that figures to be Hector Olivera’s spot once he overcomes his hamstring issues. If he overcomes his hamstring issues.
