Shortstops

Dropping off: Danny Santana (37th), Jordy Mercer (43rd), Christian Colon (46th), Everth Cabrera (47th), Jonathan Villar (49th), Andrew Romine (50th)

o If Tulo couldn’t stay in Coors, there certainly wasn’t a better situation for him out there than Toronto. He takes over as the No. 1 shortstop this month with Hanley sleepwalking through these last couple of months.

o The other Ramirez here has fared much better, as Alexei hit .300 with three homers and five steals during the White Sox’s July surge. The only reason he didn’t move up higher than eighth is that the White Sox are still batting him seventh.

o A healthy Lowrie jumps back up to 19th in the rankings. He again looks like a mixed-league option after taking over at third base in Houston. Luis Valbuena, listed at second here, stands to lose much of his playing time unless he can outhit Chris Carter as a first baseman against righties.

o It’s unclear what the Mariners’ plan is for Marte once Robinson Cano returns to second base, but now that they’ve called him up, they might as well use him. If it’s at shortstop, then Miller will probably move to left field. If it’s in center field, then Austin Jackson will head to the bench. I don’t think Marte is likely to possess mixed league value. He can hit for a decent average, but it won’t come with much power and I’m not sure the Mariners will want him attempting a bunch of steals right away.
