Adrian Peterson to Seahawks? and more Wednesday notes 3/8/17

This is the time of year when National Football League fans deal with a bit of what is real, but is not, and a lot of nonsense, yet could happen. A few of these are important to Seattle Seahawks followers. Here are a few for Wednesday, along with some links to read more.

This is the day for much speculation as far as where players might end up signing or being traded. In the last full final day of the league year, many players already know their future destinations. “Legal tampering” means the same as “alternative facts”: Nothing. As far as potential Seahawks moves, however, most is still unknown.

Perhaps the biggest name being spoken about by 12s at this point is running back Adrian Peterson. Peterson is an aging back coming off a major injury. Though he still appears to have the physical skills to be productive, the question becomes why would Seattle be his next team? Peterson does not catch the ball or block well. He is basically a two-down back at this point in his career who might be asking for too much money for the Seahawks to pursue. Seattle does not appear to be actively recruiting him to be a Seahawk, so most of the speculation about Peterson-to-Seattle may come from Peterson’s father referring to Seattle as a possible destination.

Has Peterson shown himself thus far in his career to be a more productive back than either of the two current Seahawk candidates vying to be the starter in 2017, Thomas Rawls and C.J. Prosise? Of course. Peterson based on statistics alone is very likely a Hall of Fame player. Rawls and Prosise are not there yet and may never be. Still, Rawls and Prosise have shown the potential to be very good. Plus, they cost less. Peterson may not be worth the money the Seahawks would spend on him when that money may be better spent elsewhere.

Still, Adrian Peterson is an intriguing idea in Seattle if mostly because he runs like Marshawn Lynch. Lynch is gone, of course, and Peterson should never be brought in.

News around the N.F.L.

As for news of one of the Seahawks division rivals, the San Francisco 49ers certainly are making a lot of moves in hopes of improving. The 49ers will be signing at least one wide receiver. Reports state that Pierre Garcon has agreed to terms with San Francisco. Brian Hoyer is expected to sign with San Francisco as quarterback. Whether he will be the starter is another issue. Do the current moves make the 49ers much better? No. But at least those poor souls to the south are trying.

Quarterback Tony Romo is expected to be released by the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday. Where will Romo land? Reports have him going to any team that does not currently have an entrenched and productive quarterback. The Denver Broncos? The Houston Texans? Arsenal (who recently lost to Bayern 10-2 in aggregate in Champions League play – apologies, I am a HUGE Bayern fan)? That said, and while Romo is not an elite quarterback, he could make any team he goes to better, so where he ends up would be interesting.

Other notable words

Josh Alper of NBC Sports says the Seahawks have no interest in Peterson.

Liz Matthews writes at USA Today that Seattle could look to its own city and the Washington Huskies to add secondary help.
