A's acquire Lowrie in 5-player deal

The Oakland A's acquired infielder Jed Lowrie from the Houston Astros on Monday as part of a five-player trade.

Lowrie and right-hander Fernando Rodriguez will go from Houston to Oakland, while first baseman Chris Carter, right-hander Brad Peacock and catching prospect Max Stassi are headed for Houston.

Lowrie, 28, hit .244 with 16 home runs last season, but he played in just 97 games because of ankle and knee problems.

He is primarily a shortstop but has also played third base and second base.

The A's signed Hiroyuki Nakajima to play shortstop, so it's unclear where Lowrie will play.

Rodriguez was 2-10 with a 5.37 ERA last season.

Carter had 16 homers last season, while Peacock had an ERA of a 6.01 with Triple-A Sacramento last season.

Stassi, who turns 22 in March, hit 15 homers for High-Class A Stockton.
