Congratulations to Utah State. A year after some at-large team took their rightful spot in the tournament (USU's 25-3 record wasn't good enough), the Aggies probably killed some bubble team's dreams by bumping Pacific to an at-large bid.
C-USA and the MAC seem to have the teams right on the bubble. UAB, DePaul, Miami OH and Buffalo couldn't have been pleased by the Aggies' win.
My guess is that the Blazers and RedHawks go, and the Blue Demons and Bulls won't be cheering for Utah State as the watch the tourney.
ACC • Bubble: N.C. State, Maryland
• In: UNC, Duke, Wake, Ga. Tech
Georgia Tech (19-10, 8-8) The good: In ACC final, 40-ish RPI. The bad: No other good wins. The verdict: Win over UNC could dramatically boost GT's seed.
Maryland (16-12, 7-9) The good: Swept Duke. The bad: Lost three times to Clemson. The verdict: Not out of it, but 3-7 finish is very damaging.
North Carolina State (18-13, 7-9) The good: Swept Maryland. The bad: Was 10-1, now 18-13. The verdict: Beating Wake puts N.C. State in great position to be the fifth ACC team.
Miami FL (16-12, 7-9) The good: Won at Florida, 7 ACC wins. The bad: Hard to get past the home loss to South Carolina State. The verdict: NIT.
Virginia Tech (15-13, 8-8) The good: Conventional wisdom says ACC's No. 4 seed goes. The bad: RPI near 120. The verdict: Losing to GT assures Hokies of NIT spot.
Big East • Bubble: Notre Dame
• In: BC, UConn, 'Cuse, 'Nova, Pitt, W.Va.
Notre Dame (17-11, 9-7) The good: Beat BC, nine Big East wins. The bad: Smacked at home by UCLA. The verdict: Will rue opening-round loss to Rutgers.
West Virginia (21-9, 8-8) The good: On a tear, swept Pitt. The bad: Lost to Marshall. The verdict: Beating BC and Villanova in the tourney is more than enough.
Georgetown (17-12, 8-8) The good: Won at Pitt, 'Nova. The bad: Went from 8-3 to 8-8, mid-90s RPI. The verdict: NIT.
Big Ten • Bubble: Iowa, Indiana
• In: Illinois, Mich. St., Wisconsin, Minnesota
Minnesota (21-10, 10-6) The good: Finished strong. The bad: Home losses to Florida State, Northwestern. The verdict: Will be in tournament after thumping Indiana in quarterfinals.
Indiana (15-13, 10-6) The good: Played everyone. The bad: Looking at 13 Ls. The verdict: A 15-13 record in a less-than-great conference shouldn't be good enough.
Iowa (21-11, 7-9) The good: Beat Louisville, Texas, crushed Texas Tech. The bad: Started 4-9 in Big Ten. The verdict: Hawkeyes have a real shot after beating Michigan State.
Big 12 • Bubble: Iowa St., Texas, Texas A&M
• In: Okla, Kan, OSU, TX Tech
Texas (20-10, 9-7) The good: Big win at Oklahoma State. The bad: First-round tourney loss to Colorado. The verdict: Longhorns are short-handed but still can rattle off a big win or two.
Iowa St. (18-11, 9-7) The good: Won at Kansas in seven-game win streak. The bad: Home loss to Nebraska. The verdict: Quarterfinal loss to Texas Tech shouldn't cost Cyclones.
Texas A&M (19-9, 8-8) The good: Finished strong, until ... The bad: Went 11-0 out of conference for a reason. The verdict: Crushing loss to Kansas State in first round.
C-USA • Bubble: DePaul, UAB
• In: Louisville, Charlotte, Cincinnati
DePaul (19-10, 10-6) The good: W at ND, 3 C-USA road Ws. The bad: In-state losses to N. Illinois, Bradley and Northwestern. The verdict: Dicey. Seemingly behind UAB now. Both are among the group that barely gets in or barely doesn't.
UAB (21-10, 10-6) The good: Won 5 in a row before losing to Louisville. The bad: Home loss to ECU. The verdict: Right on the fringe but have absolutely no big wins. UAB probably sneaks in.
Pac-10 • Bubble: Empty
• In: Arizona, Washington, Stanford, UCLA
UCLA (18-10, 11-7) The good: Big win at ND, 40-ish RPI. The bad: Swept by Stanford. The verdict: Looked terrible in tourney loss to OSU but should get in.
Stanford (18-12, 11-7) The good: Beat Arizona and Washington, swept UCLA. The bad: Top scorer out, lost twice to WSU and ASU. The verdict: Finally beat WSU in quarterfinals to lock up a spot.
SEC • Bubble: Vanderbilt
• In: Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Miss. St.
Vanderbilt (18-13, 8-8) The good: Beat Alabama. The bad: Lost to Oregon, Georgia. The verdict: NIT bound.
