Anytime North Carolina messes with its iconic argyle-trimmed basketball jerseys, the changes inevitably inspire a polarizing reaction among Tar Heels fans.
The latest modification is no exception even if it's more of a tweak than a drastic makeover.
North Carolina announced Tuesday that the new jerseys it will unveil at its "Late Night with Roy" celebration on Friday night are identical to the previous ones in front but feature an aerographic design in back incorporating the Old Well, an outline of the state and a basketball. The graphics on the back are similar to ones Duke, Texas, Kentucky and other Nike schools have worn the past two or three years.
Reaction to the jersey redesign has not been positive among North Carolina fans on Twitter or Tar Heels-themed online forums.
Wrote one fan: "Hopefully a temporary experiment."
Tweeted another: "Hate the new #UNC jerseys, but they'll look nice with a net hanging around them next April."
The discontentment among North Carolina fans is certainly no surprise, but they should probably be thankful the latest jersey modifications aren't as appalling as the school's previous attempts.
The last time the Tar Heels attempted a major redesign in 1999, the school infamously replaced the "North Carolina" on the front with an interlocking NC logo only to switch back the following season due to extreme backlash. Then there were the ill-fated silver jerseys without a stitch of Carolina blue that the school unveiled in February 2010 in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Air Jordan brand.
Those were abominations. This is more of a slight misstep.
