Got next
When it comes to developmental drivers, Roush Racing seems to have a stash of them hidden away in some small warehouse, just waiting for their number to be called.
With little fanfare, Roush Racing put one of its finalists from last season's Driver X competition behind the wheel of a Craftsman Truck this past weekend. Peter Shepherd, 19, didn't exactly set the world on fire – he started 25th and finished 31st – but he proved he can race with the big boys.
Afterward, Shepherd knew exactly who to thank for giving him his big break.
"I really want to thank Jack Roush for giving me this opportunity to drive the No. 50 Ford F-150 truck this weekend," Shepherd said. "This has been a great learning experience for me and I couldn't have done it without the support of everyone behind me."
Despite the current lack of qualified drivers available to fill seats in both the Busch and Nextel Cup series, there definitely is a solid group of young drivers waiting in the wings.
Canada-native Shepherd is just one of more than a dozen young drivers making names for themselves week in and week out at local tracks across North America, hoping that some big team owner will discover them.
Here are 15 more of the hottest young drivers currently racing in NASCAR's regional circuits, ranging in age from 17 to 30, hoping to become the next Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, Reed Sorenson or Kyle Busch:

At this time, there are no plans for Roush's new protégé to race again – the next Craftsman Truck Series race isn't for another three weeks. But more than likely it's a matter of time before he finds himself a home behind the wheel of a Roush Racing-prepared Ford F-150.
