Velasquez arrives by brutalizing Kongo

This is what they were raving about. Fellow fighters and gym rats have marveled for the last year or so about this kid at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose. Cain Velasquez, a former wrestler at Arizona State, has made the transition to MMA quickly. Cheick Kongo represented the best test to date for Velasquez. The Mexican-American tossed the imposing looking Kongo around the cage for 15 minutes, with Kongo on the ground for 13 of the 15. Dare we say it, the dominance was very similar to what Brock Lesnar did in his second UFC fight to Heath Herring at UFC 87. Velasquez won via unanimous decision but once again ring announcer Bruce Buffer elected to pass on giving the score. This one could've easily been 30-26 or 30-25 for Velasquez.

There were a few scary moments at the start of the fight and the beginning of the second round. While they were standing, Velasquez threw wildly trying to set up his initial takedown. He got blasted and rocked by three shots 15 seconds into the fight. He showed a chin and gumption, collecting his wits quickly, falling forward to get the takedown. The beginning of the second round was identical but Velasquez got it to the mat with 4:27 left in the round.

Velasquez (6-0, 4-0 UFC) used a Nick Diaz-like approach by peppering Kongo with hundreds of elbows and punches on the ground. He came close to finishing things in the first with a rear-naked choke. He also mounted Kongo five times. The Frenchman is one tough dude and will probably have his ears ringing for days.

Velasquez, 26, has been extremely hard on himself in spite of the fact that he's only had six pro MMA fights. He was disappointed again that he couldn't finish Kongo:

"It wasn't good enough for me or my coaches," said Velasquez. "I need to get a lot better."

UFC color analyst Joe Rogan called it a dominant performance but questioned the finishing abilities and punching power of Velasquez. He's still a work in progress but his wrestling skills, control and power, make him an instant contender in the UFC's heavyweight division. It also gets one thinking about the potential of Velasquez banging heads and grappling with behemoths like Lesnar and Shane Carwin. Could Velasquez manhandle those guys?

Ok, I would like you guys who said Kongo was going to smash Velasquez to speak up. Please, tell me something like "he got lucky" or "Kongo had a bad day". I'd love to hear something along those lines.
As far as a tat that says "Brown Pride" as being racist. Please take an inter-cultural class at a college, or at least buy a text book. It is different to be proud of who you are than to believe you're superior.

Good Lord they both looked like crap..... neither are Top 10.
Cain because he doesn't have the stand up or ability to put anyone away and Kongo because he is stupid and kept going for the clinch.
EXTREMELY frustrating fight to watch... spent 90% of it yelling for Cain to put him away and the other 10% SCREAMING at Kongo for clinching...
They've got to have Cain vs. Carwin for the #1 contender now.... and I've got Carwin in the 1st by KO.

If Kongo has time to prepare for this fight is it a different outcome? I want to see a rematch.
It must be hell being a Kongo fan.... I can just hear them "WHY ARE YOU CLINCHING?????" and "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD YOU STILL HAVEN'T BEEN WORKING ON YOUR GROUND GAME!?!?!?!?!?!?!"

so if there was a 'white pride' tattoo you know they would get criticized a lot and lead to discussions of kkk and whatnot, but its different because why? so he dosn't think that latinos are better, its beacause he's proud, i think your just spining it.. good job. i'll go take a class, i guess real world experiences dosn't count.

Cain did a good job with the GNP on Kongo (who obviously still hasn't improved his takedown defense). The thing is that he got rocked 3 times during the stand up. That said a big wrestler like Carwin or Lesnar will be too much for Cain. I think he should cut 30lbs or so and try LHW.

kongo is supposed to be this great kick boxer but he always tries to gnp guys, which doesnt work if you dont have a better ground than your opponent. give him gonzaga so he can get his ass kicked again, or let cro cop get another shot, because he was easily winning that fight untill he got blasted by "accidental" groin shots from bongo

    LOL @ mmay
I hate Kongo. He makes me sick. No JJ, no wrestling skill at all. Not smart enough to keep his distance and KO Cain. Pathetic.
Don't get too hyped on Cain. Soon as he fights someone good with JJ/TakeDownDef and power in their hands he's done. He also has no subs. Pathetic.

I know some, if there really are any, Kongo fans will say that he lost because he only had 3 Weeks to prepare. I really don't believe it would've made too much of a difference as evidenced by his extremely below average grappling skills. His stand up really isn't that great either with a 20-15-2 kickboxing record. Give Velasquez credit, he dominated a tough veteran in Kongo, but I would suprisingly have to agree with Rogan's assessment in Velasquez not having that devastating punching power. He doesn't possess that explosive K.O. power and I also remember him saying that he's never been hurt by a punch, well if Kongo could hurt him imagine what the Last Emperor would do to him he would EXECUTE HIM!!!!!!

LOL at those complaining that Cain didn't put him away. Kongo has never been stopped in a fight. He's a gatekeeper who can take a tremendous amount of punishment.

Ryan, hello where are you???? Now new haters are crying...Carwin 1st rd knockout KO, Yeah because he's got so much more experience, I like him a lot but it's people who (obviously have a thing for Cheick) say dumb stuff without any factual info that get people to spew out crap they wouldn't normally (me with the Carwin comment) say, I guess new fanboys that predicted Kongo's new and improved ground game would easily take care of this new guy (They knew nothing about and now are mad- eating their words) Give the guy some credit jeez, sounds like more Penn lovers crying about whatever they can to take credit from where it's deserved.

+1 I dont agree with the tatoo at all. Rediculous. The whole thing. If that were a white guy the press, government, swat, humanitarian groups, PITA, Spider man would all be crying faul. What a joke, what a fabrication of the liberation of the american people!

Like I have said all along, Kong has no ground game and, therefore, is not a top contender. Cain has wrestling and nothing else, totally overrated. The UFC heavy-weight division is a joke. Perhaps Cro-Cop will mix it up, but the UFC has to put him against a real fighter (to prove he is legit).

Not saying Cain is the next Fedor, but for his 6th fight he fought a better fighter than Herring, and he did get hit a few times good, But C'mon by their records Kongo should of destroyed him easy, Give him some time, is he supposed to be title shot ready after 6 fights?? Of course not but it's a start-give him a good trainer for a year and he's got to improve.

Doc I agree… I am upset Herring couldn’t fight, he would have posed more problems for Cain than Congo. It is a known fact that Congo has problems with wrestlers, so this is not a big win for Cain.
I also agree that Cain’s tattoo is crap. If a white dude where to wear “white pride” on his chest, the media would do back flips. Just another example of reverse racism….

They will make him look silly? now you guys are sounding ridiculous! He's had six fights, no-one is saying he's ready for the title, just a good young prospect. give the guy some time, Kongo was supposed to be one fight from the title-So he lost to a newcomer- does that mean Kongo was overrated or that Velasquez is just better than his 5 fight experience/ I'm going with the latter.
