The Philadelphia Phillies: World bleeping sleeping champions.

Chase Utley(notes) will have to rework his hilariously obscene phrase from October, because Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel must have been hitting the snooze button on the team's alarm clock Thursday morning.

The Phillies were totally blindsided in the third inning by Toronto's Marco Scutaro(notes), who stole second base on a walk by keeping his eyes open and his feet moving.

Scutaro, usually one of the more heads-up players in the league, seemed to have the idea in his head just he took ball four from Phillies right-hander Joe Blanton(notes). As he jogged to first, Scutaro slyly scanned the Philly infield, like any good baserunner would, and noticed Blanton put his head down while infielders Jimmy Rollins(notes) and Utley chatted it up — with neither standing near second base.

So, after rounding the first-base bag, Scutaro put his ambition into overdrive and took off like a Blue Jay out of heck for second. Blanton whirled and, after a double-clutch because neither of the former All-Stars had been paying attention, threw to Rollins. Too late.

All the Philly announcers could say was, "Wow" and how it reminded one of them of "Little League." All first baseman Ryan Howard(notes) could say was, "Football practice!" as he appeared to awake in a cold sweat.

MLB.com has VIDEO, plus Meech and friends at The Fightins did a tremendous animation of the play via the miracle of the .gif. More scathing analysis, plus a screen capture, comes after the jump.

Check out those eyes. They are among Venezuela's keenest.

The Jays, whose wings have been clipped by a massive rash of injuries, managed a three-game sweep.

Here's the take of Cholly Manuel, who probably was sporting a rash somewhere else, one caused by anger and embarrassment:

"[Scutaro] was very heads-up, and it looked like Joe kind of came off the mound and kind of dropped his head," Manuel said. "That was not being very alert."

Howard spread the blame.

"It was one of those things where he made a good play and everybody was kind of sleeping or whatnot," Howard said. "More than just the pitcher was napping on that."

Scutaro is one of the most underrated players in the league. Billy Beane is an idiot for trading him

That was something you don't see every day. Too many players are just content to settle for what they get, but Scutaro decided to help himself to second base when the other team wasn't playing attention. Baseball needs more heads-up players like this

Billy Beane he's not an idiot for trading him. He wouldn't have been able to hold on to him after that season or the next with arbitration coming up. In hind sight, it looks like a bad trade, but this is what billy beane has been doing for years. mulder and hudson anyone? what about houston street? still wanna re-sign zito? yeah... billy beane keeps making these crazy trades but they work...

Scutaro deserves to be at the All-Star game. He's producing offensively, unbelievable defensively and just freakin awesome overall. Very underapprecaited player.

Taking another look at that, it wasn't really the pitcher's fault, he turned to throw before Scutaro was even halfway there and would have easily made the play if there was anyone to throw to.

    To Coach Thompson -
You have GOT to be kidding me. I agree that the pitcher wasn't napping, but how else do you explain someone in the MAJOR LEAGUES stealing second on a walk? It's completely legal and you are blaming the RUNNER for making a heads up play and not the short stop or second baseman for playing LITTLE LEAGUE baseball? Please. Are you really a coach? Or just an apologist for two sloppy hacks. Those guys should be send back to the minors. I can't believe you would even consider blaming the runner for doing the right thing. How do you justify Scutaro getting to second base if the infield wasn't completely sitting on their heels. I agree that the pitcher wasn't at fault, because he woke up in time to attempt to throw, but there was no one there to throw to. I'd be happy to coach against you in Little League. You'd get schooled quick by a bunch of fifth graders.

The point is Scutero didn't scope just the pitcher but the WHOLE field. If he'd seen the infielders tight around second, he wouldn't have run. He didn't run because of the pitcher, he ran because the pitcher AND the loose infielders gave him a play, which he took.
That said, I agree with Coach. That was such a rude thing for Scutaro to do!

NYM is stupid for not keeping him..I loved Marco the limited amount of times he played for the mets...but the team never seems to want to wait on the development of players and decides on quick fixes for their roster problems that dont seem to work...Also Isiah THompsons is an idiot, buecause A. Utley, Rollins, Blanton, Howard were ALL NAPPING during that play. Not one of them were aware of Scutaro stealing until it was too late. And B. if youre trying to be funny recreating that mamorable NCAA football interview, you failed. MARCO is ony 3 years OLDER than both Chase and Rollins. ROllins batting .217 and leading allstart votes in the NL for his position even after this play...what a joke the ALLSTAR game truly has become. Eleminate fan voting!!!
