A word to the wise: Should you be watching the Dodgers this spring and notice a player by the name of "J. Martin" wearing Russell Martin's old No. 55, do not automatically assume his identity was stolen or that a relative is standing squatting in on a day off.
Starting this season, the Dodgers catcher will wear an extra "J." on the back of his uniform in honor of his mother Suzanne's maiden name, which is Jeanson.
"It's kind of cool to give her that. She deserves the recognition," Martin said of his mother. "She's a huge part of my life, and it's time for me to do it."
Owners of "Martin 55" jerseys might be upset by the news they'll need additional lettering, but can take solace in the fact that he didn't decide to go with his full name — Russell Nathan Jeanson Coltrane Martin — for the change.
Or with any of these ideas, for that matter.
On a personal note, I have to say that it's a pretty sweet tribute and am considering paying my mother similar tribute by changing my byline to K. 'Duk for the upcoming season. Considering it's not that far off from my real last name, I think it might work well.
A big BLS head nod to Brew Crew Ball for the redirect.
