Jim Harbaugh says the NFL team that signs Colin Kaepernick 'would be very happy'
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is very familiar with Colin Kaepernick. The two made quite the pair with the San Francisco 49ers, making it to Super Bowl XLVII.
Harbaugh left the club after the 2014 season. Two years later, Kaepernick began kneeling to protest racial injustice and police brutality in the United States. Kaepernick became a free agent at the end of the 2016 season, and hasn’t played in the NFL since.
With the NFL changing its views on peaceful protests, there’s been talk that Kaepernick, 32, could return to the league. Harbaugh thinks that’s a good idea, saying the team that signs Kaepernick “would be very happy.”
Harbaugh begins his answer by calling Kaepernick “a friend, a brother, he’s a great teammate.” Harbaugh then gives his advice to teams thinking about signing Kaepernick.
“You get some of the questions sometimes like, ‘Is he good enough? He’s had a layoff, etc.’ My personal opinion, and really advice to NFL teams is: There’s only one way to answer these questions, and only one way to find out. And that’s Colin signs somewhere, somebody signs Colin, you throw the balls out there and find out just how much value he would bring to a team.
“My advice would be, it would be worth your time, and that NFL team would be very happy.”
While a few teams — and coaches — have said encouraging things about Kaepernick during the offseason, no team has signed him yet. With Cam Newton off the market, it’s possible Kaepernick will get more looks. Kaepernick is reportedly “more motivated to play than ever.”
All it takes is one team to make it happen.
