Giants RHP Samardzija suffers pectoral injury

San Francisco Giants right-hander Jeff Samardzija will likely begin the season on the disabled list after being diagnosed with a strained pectoral muscle.

The injury was detected after Samardzija underwent an MRI exam on Thursday.

Samardzija underwent an MRI on his pitching shoulder the previous week. He has a 10.64 ERA in four outings in what has been a tough spring for the 33-year-old.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy was relieved that the injury wasn't more serious.

"He'll go a week without throwing the ball and then crank it back up," Bochy told reporters. "It shouldn't take long to get him back on the mound so it's good news."

Samardzija was slated to be the team's No. 3 starter behind Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto.

The injury likely means that veteran left-hander Derek Holland, a non-roster invitee, will make the opening 25-man roster.
