Keith Jardine defeats Chuck Liddell, split decision

Jardine outlanded Liddell 78-51 in total strikes in rounds two and three, bolstered by a 32-4 edge in leg strikes landed. Liddell had a 27-20 edge in arm strikes landed in round one. Overall, the huge underdog Jardine landed 111 of 225 (49%) total strikes to 82 of 164 (50%) for Liddell as they fought the entire fight on their feet. Jardine landed 45 leg strikes over three rounds, the difference in the fight.

Forrest Griffin defeats Mauricio Rua, third-round submission

Griffin dominated from the opening bell, landing 45 of 94 total strikes in round one to 26 of 42 for Rua. Griffin then outlanded Rua 119-29 in total strikes in rounds two and three, with 93 of those strikes from the ground. After landing 44 of 69 ground strikes, Griffin punctuated his upset win with a rear naked choke at 4:45 of round three.

Jon Fitch defeats Diego Sanchez, split decision

Thirty-eight of Fitch’s 47 total strikes landed were from the ground position. Sanchez landed just 18 total strikes all night, but did score three submission attempts, including two in the last round. Both fighters recorded two takedowns.

Lyoto Machida defeats Kazuhiro Nakamura, unanimous decision

Machida scored five takedowns that resulted in a 32-3 edge in ground strikes landed over three rounds. Machida also landed 25 legs strikes for the fight and held a 72-29 edge in total strikes.

Tyson Griffin defeats Thiago Tavares, unanimous decision

Griffin landed more strikes (51) than the submission expert Tavares attempted (40). Tavares attempted 6 submissions, but landed just 22 strikes in three rounds. 27 of Griffin’s 51 strikes landed were from the ground. Griffin also scored two takedowns and recorded two submission attempts.
