Ian Kinsler gets stitches after collision, stays in game

Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler plays baseball hard. That was made clear on a headfirst slide into third last month. So when the three-time All-Star drew a cut on his left jaw that required three stitches in a game against the Oakland A's Tuesday night, it was no surprise he made a quick return to action.

With the A's up 3-0 in the third inning and runners on second and third, Rangers catcher A.J. Pierzynski hit a bloop to shallow right-center field. The runner on third, Leonys Martin, scored easily. The runner on second, Kinsler, collided with Oakland catcher John Jaso on a nasty play at the plate. Kinsler's chin caught part of Jaso's mask and opened a gash on his grill. Home plate umpire Paul Nauert pointed out the wound to Kinsler, whose uniform was bloodied by the cut. While getting stitched up, the second baseman was also screened for concussion symptoms by the team physician. The game was delayed a few minutes and when Kinsler got the all clear, he was back on the field with a bandage. The A's eventually won 6-2. But what a gritty move by Kinsler.

Moving to Game 6 of the NBA Finals, the Miami Heat overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half to beat the San Antonio Spurs in overtime 103-100.

And Jozy Altidore scored in the 73rd minute as the United States men's national team beat Honduras 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier.
