A Mario Mandzukic goal in the second minute of the Spanish Super Cup second leg was enough to give Atletico Madrid a 2-1 aggregate win over Real Madrid and start their season with a trophy. A trophy engraved with Comic Sans, but a trophy nonetheless.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone — who was given a one-match ban by UEFA for his antics during last season's Champions League final loss to Real — had to watch the second half from the stands after being sent off for patting the fourth official in the back of the head while arguing calls.
And Gareth Bale used the match to try out some intense new yoga moves.
So Real Madrid have the UEFA Super Cup and Atletico now have the Spanish Super Cup. Could it be another season of European glory for Los Blancos and domestic triumph for Atletico? It's hard to read too much into a Super Cup, but Atletico certainly seem capable of defending their La Liga crown.
