Michael Phelps wasn’t ready for Olympic trials until he shaved his mustache

Swimmers spend months gearing up for big meets. Their workout schedules are regimented down to the minute and meter. Months before the meet, they grind through the toughest practices. Then, a few weeks out, they start a controlled taper that reduces the frequency, intensity and timing of their practices. Michael Phelps will have been preparing for this week's Olympic trials for months. And over the past few days, his regimen was just about complete.

There was just one last thing to do before taking to the pool in Omaha to make his third Olympic team: Shaving off the mustache.

    Good night, furry prince.
