I happened to sit near Adam Wheeler's family during the wrestling Olympic trials. I cheered along with them when he made the Greco-Roman team, but I didn't expect him to come home with any hardware.

I am happily wrong.

On a day where Team USA's returning world medalists, Brad Vering and Dremiel Byers, were upset, Wheeler caused the upset to bring home bronze. Wheeler won over Han Tae-Young of South Korea in his bronze medal match at 96 kg (211 lbs.)

Vering and Byers were not the only upsets of the night. Karam Gaber, the Egyptian who gained some fame in MMA and won gold in Athens, could not get past preliminary matches. Russian Aleksey Mishin, also a gold medalist in Athens, lost to eventual gold medalist Andrea Minguzzi of Italy. Swede Ara Abrahamian lost a controversial match to Minguzzi, and then angrily threw his bronze medal on the mat after the medal ceremony. After his match against Minguzzi, Abrahamian had to be restrained from going after the judges. He said that he has quit the sport, which is probably a good idea after how he acted.
