Ryan Garbutt, Marco Scandella earn DoPS hearings for Tuesday incidents (Video)

Ryan Garbutt of the Dallas Stars had a pair of dangerous trips during Tuesday night’s loss to the Winnipeg Jets.

Late in the second period, he tripped goaltender Michael Hutchinson while trying to regain his balance after being tied up with Adam Pardy. Then toward the end of the game, while battling for a loose puck with Dustin Byfuglien, he slew-footed him:

Garbutt was called for minor penalties on both occasions, but the Byfuglien slew-foot is what earned him a hearing Thursday morning with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety. Since last season, the Stars forward has been fined twice and suspended a total of seven games.

There hasn't been a suspension for slew-footing in the DoPS era, according to CapGeek's tracker, but given Garbutt's repeat offender status it wouldn't shock us if he was the first.

In other supplemental discipline news from Tuesday night, Marco Scandella will have a hearing after delivered an illegal check to the head of Brock Nelson of the New York Islanders:

Scandella doesn’t attempt to go body-on-body with Nelson. It almost looks like he’s trying to set a pick on him, but clips the Islanders forward’s head with his shoulder. He’ll have his hearing with the DoPS on Wednesday night.

This was the second illegal check to the head penalty for Scandella in 10 days. He was fined last week for a similar infraction on T.J. Oshie for the St. Louis Blues.

Another head checking penalty and another phone call with the DoPS should earn Scandella some time in the press box.
