Pass or Fail: New York Islanders all-black Brooklyn jerseys

It’s just how this works: If your professional sports team moves to Barclays Center in Brooklyn, you have to wear the super cool all-black-everything uniforms.

Remember when the New Jersey Nets were the quaint little red, white and blue team across the river? The minute they step into Brooklyn and … BOOOOOOM … they’re wearing Jay-Z approved Oakland-Raiders-on-the-parquet-floor black and white uniforms. As if Paul Pierce could have been expected to wear anything else …

Now it’s the New York Islanders venturing to Barclays beginning this season. While they’ll still wear the blue, orange and white uniforms that are mandatory for being that “other” team in New York (see also: Mets, NY), they’re going to rock these black and white sweaters they debuted on Wednesday.

Now, typically, we’re not a huge fan of black jerseys. Especially when they don’t necessarily fit the image of the franchise, as they most definitely do not with the New York Islanders. Put these on a team in Vegas, and you nailed it. Replace the "NY" with the LA Kings logo, and hooboy is that a nice look. But it just doesn't fit the Islanders.

But the Isles are a special case.

Back in 2011, they tried the black jersey thing before, and it was horrendous:

At best, indoor lacrosse jerseys. At worst … well, they’re just the worst and that’s that.

So these new Islanders jerseys already have a leg up in the sense that the bar is that low for black sweaters for this franchise.

In summary: Completely unnecessary attempt to force a level of bad-ass on a franchise that doesn’t fit the part, combined with a really nice looking black sweater that is a far cry from the threaded feces that was the previous Islanders black jersey.

Of course, it doesn't really matter in Brooklyn: The hipsters are going to wear the Fishsticks jerseys ironically anyway..

But what do you think?

PASS OR FAIL: The New York Islanders’ new third jerseys.
