NHL expansion process ongoing after exec committee meeting
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The NHL’s executive committee wrapped up their meeting on Monday with no immediate news on expansion.
Commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters that research was given to the executive committee, but the process is ongoing.
The league will update the full Board of Governors at their meeting at 3:30 p.m. pacific time on Monday.
The NHL’s executive committee consists of Rocky Wirtz of the Chicago Blackhawks, Jeff Vinik of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Larry Tanenbaum of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ed Snider of the Philadelphia Flyers, Jeremy Jacobs of the Boston Bruins, Murray Edwards of the Calgary Flames, Peter Karmanos Jr. of the Carolina Hurricanes, Craig Leipold of the Minnesota Wild, Henry Samueli of the Anaheim Ducks and Ted Leonsis of the Washington Capitals.
A vote on expansion isn’t expected here in Pebble Beach, but the NHL will likely share more information on the process and where it stands. Only Las Vegas and Quebec City have submitted official bids. Seattle did not put in a bid on time.
The league has cooled on expansion to some degree since its September Board of Governors meeting when it said there was no timetable to expand.
