(UPDATE: The Hurricanes say he broke a bone in his leg.)

Jordan Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes hasn’t missed a game in the last two seasons, and only 63 in his eight-year NHL career.

So Tuesday night in Buffalo produced a rare and distrubing sight for Staal and the Canes: The center being helped off the ice, putting no weight on his right knee and later walking around with the use of crutches.

The Hurricanes might send Staal back to Raleigh for further evaluation from doctors, after x-rays were taken following Carolina’s 2-0 exhibition game loss vs. the Buffalo Sabres.

Coach Bill Peters said, “I'm concerned, for sure.”

In the third period, Staal took a solid check from Buffalo defenseman Josh Gorges, falling to the ice and remaining there for several minutes. He was helped off the ice by trainers and returned to the back.

Losing Staal … well, many already have the Hurricanes pegged for somewhere near the bottom of the Metro Division. Losing their best center last season, at a position where they’re rather thin behind his brother Eric, would be devastating.
