Victor Cruz preps for Super Bowl by teaching Giants fans how to Salsa

It may be spicier than the "Super Bowl Shuffle," but for New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, he is hoping it too will end with a victory dance and a hoisting of the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

One-on-one Salsa lessons were included! (Craig Warga/New York Daily News)Cruz has made famous a celebratory salsa dance - a tribute to his Puerto Rican heritage with the steps taught to him by his grandmother when he was in middle school. In his second year in the league, Cruz capped off his nine regular-season touchdowns with the little salsa dance, and while he has yet to do a postseason shake — his last touchdown was in Week 17 -- he did get the chance to teach Giants fans how to do his touchdown dance.

At an event at the Modell's Sporting Goods store on Tuesday night at the New York City flagship store on 42nd Street , Cruz shook his groove thing for dozens of fans.

Cruz, who "never took salsa lessons or a class" taught a collection of Giants fans of all ages the same steps that his grandmother gave him — steps he never dared try on the field in high school or college.

"There was no celebratory dancing in high school," Cruz said. "But once you get to the NFL, when you're young watching, you just want to have your own trademark stuff, so I'm fortunate to have something the fans can cling to. It's fun to do."

There are Victor Cruz T-shirts that have begun popping up at the store, once again embracing his salsa driven stardom. Earlier this month, Cruz turned down an opportunity to appear on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" reality show that Emmitt Smith and Hines Ward both appeared on, citing a desire to focus on what is still a fledgling career.

And now with a newborn in his house, he readily admits to adjusting to fatherhood and changing diapers — all as he gets ready for the Super Bowl in two Sundays time against the New England Patriots. Even with a baby girl in the house, Cruz said it will be business as usual even with early morning feedings perhaps interrupting his usual eight hours of sack time.

"I'm just going to go out there and go through the same regimen — throw with Eli [Manning] before the game," Cruz said.

"The Patriots are a good team. They have discipline on both sides of the ball, and it's going to be a challenge for us. But we will be prepared to play a good football game, and it should be a good one."

I thought the showboating thing, until the game against New Orleans. It stood out to me because he caught a touchdown pass toward the end of the game and just handed the ball to the official. NO dance. They were getting clobbered. He is a true sportsman and seems like a great kid who just loves the game.

The kid is genuine and likes to have fun. He appreciates and respects the game, as well as his heritage and family. He does it as a tribute to his grandmother. Keep in mind, he also knows when it's the time and place. When they're winning, he does it. When they're down or losing, he just hands it to the ref. Can't be made at that.

as the Giants demonstrate, one guy showing personality on the team is good, as the Jets show, 60-plus guys fighting for the limelight doesn't work, and I'm a Jets' fan who can't help but root for the boys in blue to go all the way after the obstacles they've overcome. And Cruz has simply been magnificent this season.

and if he played for the Jets he'd be run out of town for showboating, I love it, tho it is pretty wild how he came out of nowhere in this day and age of extreme ESPN scouting and such

There will be many more coming your way Harry, since DB's aren't allowed to hit them anymore. Back in the day, the two games against the Eagles alone would have changed his grins to a grimace.

So true, I overlooked that, I narrowed into the NY thinking w all the crap between the teams but thats a great point, I'm sure the evil genius will figure out how one of his scrub DBs can pop him next week tho, or he'll score another ridiculous 99 yarder

That seems likely, with their different zones. Depends if the officials call a little bit of the holding in the trenches. Like, how can the niners have had something maybe over a half-dozen sacks and probably twice that many knock downs and get only one holding call?.It doesn't seem possible with that pass rush.

AS A GIANTS FAN FOR THE LAST 61 YEARS...........I SAY GO FOR IT CRUZ. HE SHOWS ALL THE "SO-CALLED" EXPERTS AND ALL THE TESTS THEY GIVE THE PLAYERS COMING OUT OF COLLEGE THAT NOT BEING DRAFTED IS NOT A CURSE BUT A BLESSING. ALL THOSE MACHINES CAN'T MEASURE A MAN'S HEART AND DESIRE. GO GIANTS WIN IT AGAIN..................

Love the Giants receiver group. No diva, no Celebrity, no Me first, no Jackson style. Just very productive.
      Love Wes Welker too.

The thing is, he's not doing his dance to make other players look bad or show off. He does the dance as a tribute to his grandmother. That's vastly different than jumping up on a camera stand to pose with a scowl on your face, or doing some kind of "I'm better than you" thing; he seems to just be genuinely dancing out of happiness he scored. Decent kid.

If you don't like Cruz's enthusiasm, then something is wrong with you. He is not boastful, disrespectful or arrogant. This is simply a genuine expression of joy and a tribute to his grandmother. By the way, he has also become one of the best wide receivers in the NFL.

It's an interesting comment on society, isn't it? We are used to seeing many great Latino baseball stars for years now but football, not so much. It speaks to the Latino influence on our country as a whole, it's not an unfamiliar thing to us, as a matter of fact, it's pretty cool! The spanish stations on cable are popular now with non spanish speaking people, men in particular, it doesn't hurt that those women are so hot! LOL Being from NJ and not far from Paterson, where Victor is from, the Latino flavor is all around us, the food, the culture, the music, it's very familiar and pleasant. Family is important and Latino culture thrives on family. This young man came out of nowhere and has become a star on the team, the salsa dance is now his signature and he has everyone in the area, not just Giants fans, doing it! Let's hope we get to see it a few times in the Super Bowl!

Is it just me, or does the kid on the right side of the top picture look like a kid-version of Prince Fielder??
