New England Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard has been sentenced to 30 days in jail, two years of probation and 100 hours of "law enforcement-related" community service after being found guilty of assaulting a police officer in Lincoln, Nebraska on April 21, 2012.
Dennard will be available for the Patriots' offseason program and training camp this offseason as his jail time is not scheduled to begin until March 1, 2014. Dennard will receive credit for three days he has already served.
According to Field Yates of ESPN Boston, Dennard's attorney says the NFL officials have informed him that they would not discipline his client over the incident. On the surface, that makes sense as the incident occurred before Dennard entered the NFL. However, league officials informed ESPN Boston that the league will review the case for potential disciplinary action.
Before his arrest, Dennard, who played his college ball at the University of Nebraska, was projected to go as high as the third round in the 2012 NFL draft. The off-field incident caused his draft stock to plummet to the seventh-round where New England made him the 224th player to be chosen in the draft. Dennard's four-year contract with the Patriots is worth a total of $2,157,484 and included less than $58,000 in guaranteed money. The last player selected in the third round of the draft signed a four-year contract worth $2.6 million that included over $506,000 in guaranteed money.
Each game check that Dennard loses in 2013 is worth $28,235, or 1/17th of his $480,000 base salary.
Dennard sat on the bench for the first month of the season before earning a starting role in mid-October. In 10 games, and seven starts, Dennard had 35 tackles and three interceptions, including one he returned 87 yards for a touchdown in a 59-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 18. The Patriots will be looking for Dennard to continue to start opposite Aqib Talib in 2013.
