Buffalo Bills first-round quarterback E.J. Manuel will miss the remainder of the preseason after undergoing a surgical procedure on his left knee, head coach Doug Marrone announced on Saturday.

"EJ Manuel had some swelling in his left knee this morning and was examined by our medical staff. An MRI revealed that he will need to have a minor knee procedure and that has been scheduled," Marrone said. "He will miss the remainder of the preseason and then be re-evaluated at that time. Kevin Kolb will be our starting quarterback for this weekend’s game at Washington."

With Manuel out for the remainder of the preseason, Kolb will likely be the Bills' starting quarterback when they open the regular season against the New England Patriots on Sept. 8.

While Kolb entered training camp as the No. 1 quarterback, Manuel had outplayed the veteran during the first two preseason games, completing 26 of 33 pass attempts (a 78.8 completion percentage) for 199 yards with two touchdowns for a passer rating of 111.9 in about three quarters of action. Meanwhile, Kolb completed 13-of-21 pass attempts for 111 yards and an interception in the first half of Friday night's 20-16 win over the Minnesota Vikings, resulting in a passer rating of 58.3. The Bills punted four times in the seven possessions with Kolb at quarterback, but he did engineer a pair of drives ending in field goals before exiting game in favor of Manuel.

In addition to Manuel's injury news, the Bills announced that wide receiver Kevin Elliott will miss the season with a torn ACL.
