Texas will use two quarterbacks in season opener against Notre Dame

For those waiting for Texas to name a starting quarterback, well, it might be awhile.

Both coach Charlie Strong and quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson said the Longhorns would use both junior Tyrone Swoopes and redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard to open the season against Notre Dame. However, neither coach noted who would take the first snap under center.

Swoopes played in 12 games a year ago and was the Longhorns’ starter after David Ash was sidelined with a concussion after the season opener. Swoopes completed just 58 percent of his passes while throwing 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Heard, a dual-threat quarterback, was a four-star member of the Longhorns’ 2014 class.
