Taysom Hill changing jersey number to No. 7

BYU quarterback Taysom Hill will be wearing a different number for his final college season.

Hill said on Twitter Thursday night that he'd be changing his jersey number to 7 in honor of his late brother. Hill has worn No. 4 for the entirety of his BYU career.

Hill's brother Dexter died at 31 in late March. Taysom Hill was excused from the team's spring game to be with his family after Dexter's death. Dexter Hill, who played college football at Dixie State and Northern Iowa after he was the conference's player of the year at his community college in 2004, wore No. 7.

Taysom Hill got a medical redshirt to return for the 2016 season. He's missed most of the past two seasons with injuries and also suffered a knee injury during his freshman season in 2012. He started the season-opening game against Nebraska in 2015 but had to leave the game after he suffered a Lisfranc injury to a foot. That injury caused him to miss the rest of the season.

He was replaced in that game by Tanner Mangum and will be competing with Mangum for the starting gig in 2016.
