SMU shows off crimson and chrome helmet for TCU game (Photo)

If SMU plays as well as this new helmet looks, the Mustangs may win a few games this season.

The school showed off a crimson and chrome helmet on Thursday that it'll wear against TCU on September 27.

Looks pretty sweet, doesn't it? It's probably a good idea that the chrome helmets aren't getting worn on Saturday. Not only is it SMU's first game without coach June Jones, who resigned after the second week of the season, but it's against Texas A&M. While the game on ABC/ESPN2 is sure to draw some viewers who typically don't see SMU play, there's a chance it could closely resemble the blowouts SMU suffered against Baylor and North Texas.

Tom Mason is SMU's interim coach. In his column for SMU's site, athletic director Rick Hart said the school would find a search firm in the next two weeks to start looking for a new coach and the program's goal is to be the best team in the American Athletic Conference.

Getting back to the coaching search process, we don't have time to burn, but we do have time to be thoughtful and creative. Within the next two weeks, we will likely engage a search firm and confirm the role of the search committee. While we want to be inclusive, we must also be nimble and ensure confidentiality, or we will not be successful in attracting top candidates. Many of the individuals we may wish to speak with will not be available until the end of the regular season - as early as Thanksgiving or as late as conference championship games. In the meantime, we will use this time to our advantage to be prepared to act decisively at the appropriate moment. President Turner and I will make the hiring decision, with input and approval from a broader group.
