Oregon State surprises walk-on Gabe Ovgard with scholarship

It’s every walk-on player’s dream to receive a scholarship.

Oregon State safety Gabe Ovgard realized that dream on Monday.

Beavers head coach Gary Andersen gathered his team before a Monday workout and had selected players pick “prizes” out of a hat for another teammate. The prizes included, among others, a “30-minute study hall,” but the final choice was a full-ride scholarship for Ovgard.

Ovgard, a native of Kiamath Falls, Oregon, arrived on campus in 2014 as a walk-on receiver. He redshirted his first year and was practicing with the scout team when Andersen arrived in 2015. The coach decided to move Ovgard over to defense and he emerged as a contributor for the Beavers in 2015.

“I could not be more grateful to announce that my time as a walk-on has come to an end and I will officially be on scholarship starting this fall,” Ovgard said in a Twitter post. “All glory and praise go to God. I'd also like to thank Coach Andersen, Odum, Yancy and the rest of the staff for believing in me.”

Overall in 2015, Ovgard played in 12 games, making two starts, and finished with 23 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception.
