Oregon State’s great start takes a huge hit as QB Sean Mannion needs knee surgery
Oregon State is one of the biggest surprises in college football, and quarterback Sean Mannion has been a breakout star.
The Beavers will have to go forward without their standout quarterback, because Mannion is going to be out for some time.
KEZI-TV tweeted that Oregon State coach Mike Riley said Mannion needs knee surgery and will be out an undisclosed amount of time. That's a huge blow for the Beavers, who are 4-0 and tied atop the Pac-12's North Division with in-state rival Oregon at 3-0 in conference.
Mannion, a sophomore, was a huge part of that success. He has 1,358 passing yards in four games, including 433 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-35 win at Arizona on Sept. 29.
BeaverBlitz.com lists Cody Vaz as Mannion's backup. Vaz is 6 of 17 for 48 yards in his career, with all of those stats coming in 2010. He didn't appear in a game last season and hasn't thrown a pass this year.
All of a sudden, Vaz could be on the spot for the No. 10 team in the nation. His first start could come Saturday at BYU, which has one of the best defenses in the nation this season.
