North Dakota State wins third consecutive FCS title with rout of Towson
North Dakota State's season started with a win over Kansas State and ended with a championship.
The Bison capped an undefeated season Saturday in Frisco, Tex., defeating Towson 35-7 in the FCS Championship Game.
The game turned on a single play. With five minutes to go in the second quarter and the game tied 7-7, Towson lined up for a 41-yard field goal attempt. It was blocked, and North Dakota State's Kyle Emanuel returned the ball for 59 yards to the Towson 5.
One play later, North Dakota State's Ryan Smith punched it in and the rout was on as the Bison shut down Towson and added 14 points in the second half.
Four players scored rushing touchdowns for NDSU including quarterback Brock Jensen who also threw one. It was the final game at NDSU for coach Craig Bohl, who is leaving for Wyoming.
In both 2011 and 2012 North Dakota State beat Sam Houston State for the title.
Saturday's game was also marred by a very torn up playing surface. According to officials at Toyota Stadium, the facility followed its standard turf replacement protocols in November to prepare the field for the game. However, an ice storm hit north Texas shortly after the sod was laid and the grass didn't have a chance to take root.
