Nevada WR Tucker Melcher off ventilator, condition improving

Nevada WR Tucker Melcher's condition is getting better.

His family said Melcher was on a ventilator Tuesday, but Melcher's sister tweeted Friday that Melcher was off the ventilator.

Nevada coach Brian Polian visited him in the hospital on Friday and said Melcher was sitting up. Melcher has been in the intensive care unit at a Reno, Nev. medical center because of a brain infection.

On Thursday, his father, Bubba Melcher, said an MRI had shown swelling had decreased in his brain. Tucker Melcher became ill over spring break, when he thought he had a sinus infection. However, his condition deteriorated and had a fever and two seizures after he went home to Reno.

He had also been suffering paralysis on his left side, but his father told the Reno Gazette-Journal that he was able to move his left arm and leg upon doctor's commands.

Melcher walked on to Nevada's football team before the 2013 season and redshirted last year.
