Jerry Kill won't have post-coaching position at Minnesota

After he retired from coaching during the middle of the 2015 season, Jerry Kill was expected to remain in a non-coaching capacity at Minnesota.

However, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, that capacity didn’t come to fruition. Kill and the school are parting after they were unable to come to an agreement on his post-coaching duties.

Kill told the paper than any work he does with the school would be as an independent contractor rather than a university employee.

“I visited with the president, and it was very professional in manner,” Kill said. “He would like me to speak on behalf of the university, raise money and teach a class or two. I really appreciate that offer, but I want to be involved with athletics. I’ve been involved with athletics my whole life, and I want to be around the kids more than anything.

“That wasn’t part of the offer. I understand that, but that was the deal-breaker for me.

Kill retired midway through the season because of health issues. He missed time in 2013 because of epilepsy and said seizures had returned and prevented him from doing his job fully. Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys, who had previously filled in for Kill when he was absent, was named the interim and subsequently the permanent football coach.

The Star-Tribune reported that Kill has been paid a $600,000 settlement after his retirement.

The Gophers went to the Motor City Bowl in 2015 and beat Central Michigan to finish the season 7-6. In 2014, Kill's final full season as Minnesota coach, Minnesota was 8-5.
