Jameis Winston solid in 2014 debut as the Seminoles closer
Jamies Winston’s on-field star power did not stop when the college football season ended.
On Saturday, he took the mound for his first collegiate save of the season. He sat down all six batters he faced to secure a 4-1 win against Niagara.
"Jaboo [Winston] came in and of course he has been in that situation. But for him to pitch like he did was really a lift for us, because it was a tough situation," Florida State coach Mike Martin said. "I was very impressed with how he wasn't affected by the situation. He was just enjoying his opportunities and really showed a lot of poise."
Winston came on in the eighth inning with the score 3-1. Niagara had just scored and had runners on first and second base with no outs. But Winston stayed collected and used his slider to keep the Niagara batters off balance.
"When I get that rolling, it's hard. It's tough for batters to get a good at bat because I feel like that's one of my best pitches," Winston said.
Winston, the Seminoles quarterback who is coming off a Heisman Trophy and a national-championship winning campaign, came into the baseball season hoping to secure the team’s closer role. Looks like he’s doing a pretty good job so far.
