Former OU DT takes issue with Mixon discipline after Johnson dismissal

Former Oklahoma defensive tackle Tony Casillas doesn't agree with his school's discipline of running back Joe Mixon.

Mixon, a highly-touted recruit in the class of 2014, missed the entire season after he punched a female OU student at a mall restaurant. He's back on the team for the 2015 season.

Monday, Florida State dismissed freshman quarterback De'Andre Johnson. He had been charged with battery after allegedly punching a female FSU student at a bar and kicked off the team shortly after the surveillance video went public.

While certain media outlets were allowed to view the surveillance tape of the Mixon incident, it has not been released to the public.

Casillas is referencing the university's handling of the racist chant used by members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Whether you support the way Oklahoma handled Mixon's transgression or not, you have to admit that Casillas has a very good point. And it's fair to wonder, given the university's likely prior knowledge of details in the case, if Florida State would have kept Johnson on the team had his video not gone public.

A university official said coach Jimbo Fisher saw the security footage late Monday night while on vacation.

Mixon made a plea deal after the charges that included a one-year deferred sentence and community service.

Oklahoma president David Boren said in June that he expects Mixon and linebacker Frank Shannon to be better people following their discipline. While Shannon was never charged with a crime, he was suspended for the 2014 season after a Title IX investigation into violations of the school's sexual misconduct policy.

Casillas played 12 seasons in the NFL after his Oklahoma career. He was a member of Oklahoma's 1985 national title team and a two-time All-American. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
