Chris Johnson likely to start at QB for Baylor vs. North Carolina

Jarrett Stidham likely won't be making a return from injury for Baylor's Russell Athletic Bowl matchup vs. North Carolina.

Baylor coach Art Briles told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday that Chris Johnson, the man who replaced Stidham vs. Oklahoma State and started vs. TCU and Texas, would probably make the start vs. the Tar Heels.

"It doesn't look like [Stidham is] going to be ready," Briles said.

Stidham suffered a broken bone in an ankle vs. the Cowboys.

Johnson had to replaced during his start against Texas because of a concussion. He was unable to return and Baylor had to use two converted wide receivers at quarterback for the rest of the game. The Bears went to a modified single-wing attack in the second half and nearly came back to steal a win before losing 23-17 to the Longhorns.

The loss dropped Baylor to the Russell Athletic Bowl. Had Baylor beaten Texas, the Bears would be playing Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl. UNC is in the Russell Athletic Bowl after losing to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. Florida State ended up getting the ACC's second New Year's Six bowl slot.

Johnson, a sophomore, is 15-38 for 220 yards passing with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He was 7-24 in the Bears' 28-21 overtime loss to TCU in a driving rainstorm.

Stidham threw for 1,265 yards and had 14 total touchdowns for the Bears in 2015. He became the team's starting quarterback after Seth Russell was lost for the season because of a vertebra fracture in his neck vs. Iowa State.
