Brent Stockstill named Middle Tennessee State's QB

Redshirt freshman Brent Stockstill will start at quarterback for Middle Tennessee State after he beat out Austin Grammer for the starting job.

Grammer was the team's starting quarterback in 2014. He started all 12 of the Blue Raiders' games as the team went 6-6. Stockstill is the son of MTSU coach Rick Stockstill.

"I told all of our players coming into camp that every position is open competition and I will say the same thing next year,” Rick Stockstill said via the Daily News Journal. “I believe in competition and what you did yesterday doesn't matter. You have to improve and earn it every day.”

Father-son coach and quarterback combinations are nothing new in college football. You likely remember Cody and Dan Hawkins at Colorado, and Darrell Dickey played for his dad Jim at Kansas State. There's also the Army combination of Red and Robert Blaik. Robert was the quarterback for his dad's 1950 Army team that only lost to Navy. And then Robert was kicked out of school with more than 30 others for cheating the next year.

Offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner touted Brent's decision-making.

“I think the biggest thing with Brent is that he gets the ball out quick and downfield,” Faulkner said via the DNJ. “He’s been in this system for a couple of years and understands the tempo.”

“This was a tough (decision), and these are two great quarterbacks, and I believe in both of them.”

Grammer threw for 2,557 yards, 17 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2014. Stockstill played in the team's first game of the year in 2014 before he redshirted. MTSU opens the 2015 season against Jackson State.
