Boise State's famous blue turf has transformed into natural green grass (Video)

Boise State’s iconic blue field has gone green – for now.

According to the Idaho Statesman, Albertsons Stadium will host an international soccer match on Saturday between Athletic Bilbao (Spain) and Club Tijuana (Mexico) on Saturday. Bilbao’s league has a contract with FIFA that requires its teams to play on natural grass “in order to protect players from injury and ensure the best playing surface.”

To comply with that rule, the field at Boise’s stadium is now green for the first time since 1986.

Don’t worry, BSU fans. Your beloved blue turf will return by July 22. According to the Statesman, the grass field has actually been laid on top of both a multi-layered protective plastic floor and a waterproof tarp, which ensures the turf remains in great shape and avoids potential water damage.

Once the blue turf returns, the natural grass used for the game will be donated to Ann Morrison Park in Boise.
