Alabama WR Calvin Ridley cleared in fake ID card investigation

Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley has been cleared in an investigation regarding whether he knew of a plan to have another student take his ACT.

According to the Sun Sentinel, Monarch High School security guard Elvin McCray claims football coach Calvin Davis approached him in Dec. 2014 about creating a school ID card with Ridley’s name and the face of another student in an effort to let that student take Ridley’s standardized test.

However, an investigation by the state Board of Education found no evidence that Ridley was involved or even knew about a plan to have another student take his test. Ridley, who just finished his freshman year at Alabama, took his own ACT and received a high enough score to enroll in the university.

"From what I understand, he was not involved in any way," Rocky Gillis, the county athletic director for the Broward County Athletics Association, told AL.com. "The investigation was more on the coach taking it upon himself. As far as I know, he wasn't involved at all."

Davis has denied the claims and told the Sun Sentinel he believes McCray was upset because his son didn’t make the varsity team. Davis did agree to pay a $1,500 fine and take an ethics class. He stepped down as the football coach but remains a teacher at the school.

"Coach Davis has never ever approached me, as a joke or in any other way, about someone taking the ACT, SAT or any other test for me," Ridley wrote in a letter to investigators. "I scheduled my own test and passed my own test by myself."
