When an arena has no possession arrow, you improvise

Villanova and Lehigh encountered an unexpected problem when they arrived at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa., for their season opener on Friday night.

Since the arena typically hosts minor-league hockey, it didn't have a possession arrow.

Credit the referees on hand for both their arts and crafts skills and their willingness to improvise. They simply drew an arrow on a sheet of white paper in what appears to be purple crayon, a low-tech yet perfect solution to the unusual problem.

Naturally the possession arrow had to be used several times in the second half of Villanova's victory, much to the amusement of the TV audience and the embarrassment of the sheepish referee above. Yes, it looked silly. Yes, it's not something you see at a Division I basketball game very often. But, hey, it got the job done.

(Thanks, SB Nation)
