Cal Poly ties Division I record for consecutive threes
Cal Poly has emerged as an upper-echelon Big West program because of its stingy defense, so the Mustangs had to be surprised it's their outside shooting that has earned them a spot in the record books.
They tied the NCAA Division I record for consecutive 3-pointers on Saturday night by sinking 11 straight from behind the arc in a 100-54 shellacking of Cal State Northridge. Cal Poly finished 15 of 21 from behind the arc, pretty impressive for a team that entered the game shooting a modest 35 percent from 3-point range this season.
"I always thought that if we were going to be etched in the record book, it would be something defensively," Cal Poly coach Joe Callero told the San Luis Obispo Tribune. "So, for those who say Cal Poly is just too defensive oriented, we've tied an NCAA record for 3-point shooting. Now I guess we can get the monkeys off our back."
Cal Poly's shooting barrage ties a record set by both Niagara and Eastern Kentucky in 1987. Amaurys Fermin had the chance to break the record with the Mustangs' 12th consecutive three early in the second half, but his pull-up shot clanked off the iron to end the streak.
It may take another shooting performance like that for Cal Poly or anyone else in the Big West to contend with Long Beach State this season. The 49ers emphatically swept the Mustangs and fellow league contender UCSB on the road this week, remaining undefeated in league play and serving notice they're the clear favorite in the Big West this season.
