Mark Rypien’s 17-year-old nephew is racking up absolutely incredible passing statistics
Before Mark Rypien won a Super Bowl with the Washington Redskins he was an all-everything prep quarterback at Shadle Park High (Spokane, Wash.), where he set single-game and career passing records in the Greater Spokane League. He no longer holds that record, thanks to his rather prodigious nephew, who is emerging as one of the top quarterbacks in the entire nation at the tender age of 17.
Brett Rypien now holds both of the top two single game passing performances in Greater Spokane League history. He set the record for most passing yards in a game during Thursday night's 63-42 Shadle Park victory against Mt. Spokane High (Spokane, Wash.). Just as the elder Rypien excelled at Shadle Park, the younger generation does as well, with Brett Rypien tossing eight touchdown passes against Mt. Spokane while racking up an astonishing 613 yards through the air.
His passing yards broke the Greater Spokane League record of 577 yards that Rypien previously set in 2012 when he was still a sophomore. The 613 yards are also among the top-20 single game passing performances of all-time at the high school level.
If Rypien's single game performance was eye opening, his season statistics may be even more impressive. The 613 yards pushed the younger Rypien further into the lead as the career passing leader for the Greater Spokane League, as noted by the Spokane Spokesman-Review.
Just five games into his junior campaign, Brett Rypien has thrown for 5,950 yards, 59 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. That yardage topped the previous record holder, his uncle Mark, by 965, and the younger Rypien still has nearly a season and a half to come. If he remains healthy, it's entirely possible that Brett Rypien could finish his prep career with 10,000 career yards.
If he reached that threshold, Rypien would have nearly four times the yardage of the Greater Spokane League leader before his uncle, a man who just happens to be Ryne Sandberg.
There's no question that Brett Rypien has a bright future ahead of him, so long as he can remain healthy. He currently holds scholarship offers from the likes of Oregon State and Washington State, but has also attracted attention from Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, Stanford and Washington, among others.
For now his college future remains in the distance. Rypien has more records to break where he's at first.
